The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Jay Albert Stevens struck the officer in the middle of Central Highway in southern Arizona at 1:00 a.m. Thursday morning. As the deputy questioned Stevens, he confessed to shooting and killing another man, age 61. Stevens then led the deputy to the deceased’s location. The sheriff’s office released a statement on Facebook saying, “On Thursday, September 8, 2022 at approximately 1:00 a.m., a Cochise County Sheriff’s Deputy observed a male in the middle of the road at Central Highway and Sage Lane near McNeal. “The male subject waived off to the deputy and when the male subject was asked if he was okay, the male subject stated that he had just shot and killed someone. “Upon receiving additional details from the man, he stated that he did not have the address where the incident occurred, but was able to lead deputies to a resident (sic) where a 61-year-old man was found deceased.” He is being held in the Cochise County Jail and charged with first degree murder. The Sheriff’s Office is conducting a homicide investigation.
