Nurseries, primary and secondary schools in councils across Scotland will be closed to allow children to observe the official day of mourning following the death of the former monarch on Thursday, September 8. The Queen’s funeral will take place on Monday, September 19, Buckingham Palace has confirmed. After her son Charles was formally proclaimed king on Saturday, she decreed that the day of the funeral would be a public holiday. Following the announcement that the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on Monday 19 September 2022 will be a public holiday, all schools and early education institutions will be closed as a mark of respect. We will announce any impact on other services as soon as possible. pic.twitter.com/NlerIOI6Bm — NorthLanCouncil (@nlcpeople) September 12, 2022 Schools and nurseries across Glasgow will be closed on Monday while the council continues to provide other “essential services, keeping our city mobile, clean and safe”. All West Lothian, South Lanarkshire and North Lanarkshire schools and early education and childcare facilities will remain closed. STV News understands the Scottish Government has issued national guidance to all 32 councils in the country. However, some districts have yet to confirm whether schools will be closed. Some areas in Scotland have a bank holiday from Friday 16 September to Monday 19 September, which means schools will already be closed. East Lothian, Midlothian and South Ayrshire all have the September weekend between these two dates. Schools in North Ayrshire were already closed for a full day on Monday. Schools in East Ayrshire and Edinburgh also have a holiday on Monday, September 19, as do schools in Fraserburgh and Portlethen in Aberdeenshire, and in Aberlour, Craigellachie, Knockando, Tomintoul, Dufftown, Burghead, Hopeman, Lossiemouth, Forres and Rothes in Moray. Schools in Falkirk will be closed on Monday, September 12, for their normal holiday, with a local holiday also affecting schools in Buckie, Cullen, Findochty and Portknockie in Moray.
