Ianto Jenkins suffered a fatal head injury while playing on his bike at the dairy near Efailwen, Carmarthenshire, on August 3 last year. His father, Guto Jenkins, 32, ran a business from the farm selling topsoil and had taken Ianto, the boy’s older sister and a cousin with him on a delivery, the inquest heard in Llanelli. They had returned to the farm and Jenkins had parked the VW Amarok truck and trailer in the yard because the sister and cousin wanted to play with their bikes instead of accompanying him on another delivery. “After picking up my second load of topsoil, I drove back to the yard to pick up Ianto who wanted to join me again,” Jenkins said in a written statement. Ianto then changed his mind, Jenkins said. “He now wanted to stay on the farm with his sister and at this point he was a long way from the trailer. “I checked both my mirrors and they showed the back and sides of the trailer were clear and then I looked over my shoulder up close to check my blind spot. “Satisfied that it was safe to do so, I moved forward and drove the farm track to the road. I pulled away slowly and controlled and didn’t roll backwards at all. “When I got to the top of the track I got a call from my mum and her mum kept saying Ianto was dead. It was the worst call of my life. “The only thing I can think of now is that either Ianto must have been in a blind spot or moved close to the trailer while I was looking in my other mirror or forward to make sure that area was clear. . I didn’t see him at all.” Archie Bland and Nimo Omer take you to the top stories and what they mean, free every weekday morning Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain information about charities, online advertising and content sponsored by external parties. Jenkins, who is separated from the mother of his children, added: “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about Ianto. The circumstances of his death are a waking nightmare that I will live with for the rest of my life.” An autopsy found the boy had suffered “catastrophic” head trauma and would die instantly.
