The former US president participated in an exclusive interview with NDTV’s Sreenivasan Jain, which aired last week on Thursday (September 8). “What has stood out [about the interview] is fact-checking every statement the former US president makes,” said NDTV’s Sarah Jacob, referring to the international attention the channel’s on-air interview has garnered. During the interview, Trump, 76, made several false claims, including that he “beat” President Joe Biden in the 2020 election “by a landslide” and that he is “leading in the polls” ahead of the 2024 presidential election. “Would you run again, do you think you could beat him?” Jane once asked Trump. “Well, in the polls, I’m way ahead. I would think I would beat him easily. I think I beat him last time…If you look at the numbers, if you look at what happened, I beat him by a lot,” Trump replied. The screen then cuts to the findings of a Wall Street Journal poll showing “Joe Biden leads Trump” in the 2024 presidential race as of September 1. Speaking in an interview during Sunday’s (September 11) episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the late-night host said NDTV has come up with a “new and fun way to check it out.” “Can all Trump interviews be like this?” Kimmel quipped, adding, “He makes a patently false statement and disproves it in a graphic, with funky music behind it.” During the interview, Trump doubled down on his claims that the 2020 election was “stolen” from him, after Jane pointed out that the basic principle of a democratic electoral process is that the losing side admits defeat. “I agree,” Trump replied, adding, “When you lose.” Another graph then appears on the screen, showing the final tally of the electorate’s votes in the election. Trump won just 232 votes, while Biden had 306, Jain pointed out. “Well, yeah, sure. If you do the math,” Kimmel joked to the segment, adding, “But what about the fact that Trump feels like he won? That counts for nothing. In its cross-check, NDTV pointed out that Truth Social is reportedly facing “severe” financial difficulties, with an estimated loss of $6 million “in the first six months of 2022”. “Oh man, I hope he didn’t see the edited version of that interview,” Kimmel concluded his segment, before one last joke about the former president. “You know he heard New Delhi and thought he was getting a big pastrami sandwich.” During his interview with NDTV, Trump also repeated his unproven claim that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) planted the documents found at Mar-a-Lago’s Florida residence.
