Earl dumped nearly 200mm of rain on parts of the Avalon Peninsula, including the metro, over the past day and a half, leaving basements and streets flooded and vehicles stuck in knee-deep water. Waterford Bridge Road in Corpus Christies is closed due to a swollen Waterford River, while the underpass under Robert E. Howlett Boulevard and Commonwealth Avenue is flooded. Old Petty Harbor Road washes out. Traffic heading into downtown St. John’s via Pitts Memorial Drive diverted to Kilbride due to high water. A listener sent along this photo of the flooding on Robert E Howlett Memorial Drive this morning. Flooding is even worse near the overpass. Flooding in parts of Pitts Memorial as well. Avoid both areas if possible. @590VOCM #nltraffic #nlwx pic.twitter.com/OB3yuSEnVJ — Gerri Lynn Mackey (@GerriLynnMackey) September 12, 2022 Rob Carroll, a meteorologist at the Gander Bureau of Meteorology, says the metro has recorded 175mm of rain by 5:30 this morning. Earl has been stationary over the Grand Banks, but will begin moving again today with the heaviest rainfall ending by this afternoon. Rain and high winds are blamed for damaging the breakwater at Trepassey, cutting off the lower shore from the rest of the town. An update on this situation is expected later this morning. Some highways on the Avalon Peninsula have areas of heavy water this morning due to heavy rainfall. Slow down and drive carefully today. #nltraffic #nlwx pic.twitter.com/rIE6sPnDc0 — Transportation and Infrastructure NL (@TI_GovNL) September 12, 2022
