The event was also significant as it marked the couple’s reunion with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. In a statement from Buckingham Palace, a royal family spokesman said William, who is now called the Prince of Wales, “has invited the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to join him and the Princess of Wales” for the walk. The invitation was shocking as relations between the families have been strained lately. After Harry and Meghan stepped down from royal duties and moved to the United States, interactions between the couple and the royal family were almost non-existent. The Sussexes were already visiting the UK for charity events when the Queen died but, as previously reported, there were no plans to visit with William and Kate. The reunion came just hours after William witnessed the Accession Ceremony, where his father, King Charles III, was officially declared sovereign. Two days after his mother’s death, the former prince ascended the throne in an elaborate centuries-old ceremony, which was held at St James’s Palace and broadcast live for the first time.
