2,977 American flags were placed on the ground at West Pier Place Apartments in Sault Mich. Friday afternoon to honor every life lost 21 years ago on September 11, 2001. “It’s important to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11,” said Lynn, who recruited Lake Superior State University (LSSU) students to help. Several LSSU men’s basketball and Lady Lakers hockey players joined together to place the flags neatly in rows. “We try to stay involved and help out in the community,” LSSU senior Caden Ebeling said. “People come to all our games. It’s important to give back.” Ebling was too young to remember two planes crashing into the World Trade Center or a plane hitting the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. He did not remember United Airlines Flight 93, which was brought down by innocent passengers in Somerset County, PA to save countless American lives. “My mom ran to pick me up from daycare the day it happened,” Ebling said. “Even though I don’t remember, it’s important that we all remember.” Lynn hopes this helped students understand the significant impact 9/11 had on the country and parts of the world. He hopes residents and visitors will stop by to observe a moment of silence and remember that tragic day in American history. Residents and visitors have until Monday afternoon to view the flags located at West Pier Place Apartments 300 W Pier Dr, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.
