St Gallen in Switzerland retained its status as the top institution for the 12th consecutive year, with France’s HEC Paris, ESCP, Essec and EMLyon all in the top tier along with schools from the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK, Ireland and Germany — but also Tsinghua in China, for the first time. Europe pioneered the Masters in Management (MiM), which is mainly studied by people with no previous professional experience. However, strong providers have emerged elsewhere, including its traditional rivals for MBA programs in the US and Canada, as well as institutions in Australia, India, Morocco, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan. There is strong student demand for courses offered in multiple locations, with highly ranked joint programs this year from IQS/LMU/FJU between Spain, USA and Taiwan. Deusto/Audencia/Bradford in Spain, France and UK. and McIntire/Lingnan/Esade’s Global 3 license in the US, China and Spain. ESCP also offers studies at its multiple campuses across Europe, while two highly competitive additional qualifications offered to MiM students require attendance at two different schools: the Global Alliance in Education Management, known as Cems, and the Quantitative Techniques for Economics and Administration (Qtem).

The Graduate Management Admission Council, which oversees the GMAT test used by many schools to assess applications, said that nearly half of those around the world that offer MiMs had seen an increase in demand, although most of that came from international students . A separate survey earlier this year by CarringtonCrisp, an education consultancy, revealed a particularly strong appetite from students for postgraduate courses that emphasize digital skills and analytics, as well as sustainability.
Top school: University of St Gallen
The University of St Gallen tops the rankings for the 12th consecutive year with its Master’s in Strategy and International Management, writes Sophie Kiderlin. Not only do Swiss school graduates have the second-highest weighted salary three years after graduation, at $138,091, but they are also tops for career goals achieved (96 percent). St Gallen also tops the table with its careers service and is among the top schools for international job mobility. Nearly half of the FT-ranked business school programs had at least 50 percent female students in their cohorts (a 50:50 split ranks highest), with 77 percent at Tongji University’s School of Economics and Management in China. The lowest representation, with 22 percent female students, was at Tilburg University’s School of Economics and Management in the Netherlands. However, only 14 of the 100 schools reported that at least half of their teaching staff were women, with a peak of 54 per cent at NMIMS in Mumbai. The lowest was 15 percent at the Indian Institute of Management, Indore. International students make up at least half of intake at 44 schools, rising to a maximum of 98 percent at Singapore Management University: Lee Kong Chian. No foreign students were reported in Indian business schools’ MiM programs, which have highly competitive entry requirements focused on domestic students.
Biggest Rise: Luiss University
Up 23 places, the school of Rome is the biggest riser, to 53rd place, writes Leo Cremonezi. The jump is due to improved performance in several categories, notably average salary, salary increase and career advancement, which helped Luiss achieve its highest overall ranking since 2017. Salaries reported by business school graduates three years after completing the MiM fell slightly in 2022, with average pay of $79,092 compared to $80,821 in 2021 among institutions ranked in both years. St Gallen graduates reported the second highest average salaries at $138,091, behind the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore at $144,178 after adjusting for international purchasing power parity. Graduates of the Cems alliance reported significantly higher average earnings three years after completion than those from MiM programs overall, nearly $100,000, as well as greater salary progression and gave stronger ratings of goals achieved during their studies. Qtem graduates earned less than the average for FT-ranked schools, but reported strong progress, with higher salary growth in the three years after MiM completion than the average overall or for Cem graduates. Ranked schools demonstrated strong success in developing employability, with more than two-thirds reporting that at least 90 percent of graduates secured jobs within three months of completing MiM. Audrey Clegg of Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company Audrey Clegg, global head of talent at the Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company and a Cems graduate herself, says the qualification requirements for multilingual students to undertake work placements, collaborative projects and study in different countries meant that they were “almost pre-screened . It is extremely high quality: global, very comfortable work across borders.” Business schools choose to participate in the FT ranking, but not all of the different masters in management programs they offer are included. There is a wide variety in the titles, focus, pay, class sizes and length of qualifications included. This year’s intake at EMLyon included nearly 1,200 students, for example, with four other French schools teaching more than 1,000 students each, while some other courses only received a few dozen students. Esdes in France had a master’s degree that took an average of 44 months, while three schools provided the qualification in just 9 months. The average duration was about 21 months.
