Apple introduced the iPhone 14 series on September 7, 2022, with four new phones in the series. The standard iPhone 14 is the smallest (not a Mini model this time!) and cheapest iPhone of all. Of course, it goes up against its biggest rival in the Android world, the Samsung Galaxy S22. Apple and Samsung are two of the biggest competitors in the smartphone space and are constantly trying to one-up each other with their flagship phones. With the iPhone 14 and Galaxy S22 being two of the most talked-about premium devices released this year, it’s only natural that you’d consider them both for your next smartphone purchase. The Samsung vs Apple conundrum also gets more complicated this year with the return of Apple’s “Plus” line with the iPhone 14 Plus, which goes toe-to-toe with the Galaxy S22 Plus. So how do the two stack up against each other and which is the right purchase for you? Let’s dive into this Samsung Galaxy S22 vs iPhone 14 comparison to help you decide. Looking for the Galaxy S22 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max? We’ll be covering the super premium phones from both brands in a separate showdown soon.

Samsung Galaxy S22 vs iPhone 14

Design and projection

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority When comparing screen sizes, the Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are almost identical to the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus. The standard iPhone 14 has a 6.1-inch OLED display, the same as the Galaxy S22. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Plus has a 6.7-inch OLED display, slightly larger than the 6.6-inch Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus. However, there is a very big difference between the flagships when it comes to display specifications. While the Galaxy S22/S22 Plus and iPhone 14/14 Plus have HDR displays with similar peak brightness values, the Samsung phones outperform Apple’s devices with faster refresh rate panels. It’s 2022 and Apple is still sticking with 60Hz screens. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S22 series reaches 120Hz. Like their predecessors in the iPhone 13 series, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have 60Hz screens. In contrast, the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus offer smooth and flexible 120Hz displays. If you want it on the latest iPhone, you’ll have to consider spending a lot more to get one of the iPhone 14 Pro models that feature 120Hz “ProMotion” displays. The front camera placement is also completely different on both the handsets. The Samsung Galaxy S22 pair features a center-aligned selfie shooter, while the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus carry over the old notch design with Apple’s “TrueDepth” camera system for facial recognition, also known as Face ID. In terms of aesthetics and build materials, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are identical. The only difference is their size. The story is the same when it comes to the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus. They share the same build, albeit for the screen and battery size. Samsung and Apple both had glass backs and aluminum frames on their phones. However, the Galaxy S22 series has Gorilla Glass Victus Plus protection on the front, while the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have Apple’s ‘Ceramic Shield’ for damage protection. Ceramic Shield is also manufactured by Corning, the maker of Gorilla Glass. It’s exclusive to iPhones, and Apple claims it’s stronger than the glass protection on all other phones. Samsung and Apple both offer top-of-the-line phones with top-notch materials and top-notch durability ratings. Another design feature of the Galaxy S22 and iPhone 14 is IP68 protection against water and dust. So if you pick up either phone, know that you’re getting some of the best in the business when it comes to mainstream smartphone durability. Overall, both Samsung and Apple have solid, premium designs that support their devices. It really comes down to personal preference here. Whichever you choose, you’ll have a beautiful phone in your hands.

Hardware and cameras

Eric Zeman / Android Authority The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus use Apple’s proprietary SoC. You have the A15 Bionic processor under the hood, the same as the 2021 iPhone 13 series. Apple’s processor slightly outperforms Qualcomm’s SoC in benchmark tests for CPU scores. That said, you shouldn’t have any issues with actual performance on either set of phones. Apple has not stated the amount of RAM, but reports indicate that the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have 6GB of RAM. You can, however, opt for more storage on iPhones that offer a 512GB model at the top. On the battery side, the Galaxy S22 offers a 3,700mAh bank, while the S22 Plus features a larger 4,500mAh unit. The former had no problem lasting more than a day during our testing, but on days of heavy use, we found the battery lacking. This issue didn’t exist on the Galaxy S22 Plus, which gave us slightly better battery life than the more premium Galaxy S22 Ultra. The Galaxy S22 Plus and Ultra models also charge faster than the Galaxy S22, with 45W charging compared to the vanilla model’s 25W wired charging speed. Both phones feature 15W wireless charging. Apple doesn’t divulge numbers, but claims the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus can last 20 hours of video playback. The iPhone 13 delivered solid all-day battery life thanks to the A15 Bionic’s excellent power management skills. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus should overcome this, as Apple claims they offer longer battery life compared to their predecessors. We’ll obviously test this when we review the new iPhones. For charging, Apple claims both phones can charge up to 50% in about 30 minutes using the separately purchased 20W adapter. Both models support MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W and Qi wireless charging up to 7.5W. Cameras are usually what make or break people’s purchasing decisions. The Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus have a 50MP main camera, a 10MP telephoto lens and a 12MP ultra-wide shooter. The selfie camera is a 40MP unit. The megapixel count may be different, but the results from the main camera on the smaller S22s are practically identical to those from the S22 Ultra’s 108MP main camera. The images show great colors and lots of detail. All three sensors do a good job, even at night. It’s safe to say that you’re getting some of the best camera phones in the business. All three camera sensors on the Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus do a great job. We haven’t tested the cameras on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, but we certainly know the configuration. Apple has equipped the phones with a 12MP primary camera and a 12MP ultrawide camera. That’s one less rear camera than the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus. There’s no telephoto lens on the phones, but they do offer up to 5x digital zoom. On the front is a 12 MP selfie camera. Apple says it has improved low-light performance in phones using a feature it calls the Photonic Engine. Essentially Apple’s image processing technology will now work faster than before and produce better colors to ultimately improve night photography. Once again, we’ll have to test this when we get our hands on the phones. There’s one hardware-based feature the iPhone 14 has that the Samsung Galaxy S22 doesn’t — satellite connectivity. The new iPhones support an emergency messaging service that can come in handy when you don’t have a cellular signal. Imagine being lost in the woods without being able to reach emergency services. When activated, Apple’s new Emergency SOS feature uses the phone’s antennae to connect to satellite frequencies. You can then pass messages to the emergency services in case of need. This is probably the one feature the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have that the Galaxies can’t compete with.
