Minneapolis police make emotional appeal after night of violence
After a string of three shootings in Minneapolis from Thursday night to Friday morning that left two people dead, including a teenager, Minneapolis police spokesman Garrett Parten made an emotional plea at a news conference. About 12 hours later, two pregnant women were among four people shot late Friday night outside a bar, one of them with life-threatening injuries. Ultimately, in two nights 11 people were injured and 2 people were killed. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey says the common denominator is guns “When you can roll 30 to 40 rounds before you reload, it’s not just the interest of one or two people getting hit, which is tragic in itself. [but] you have a spray of bullets going all over the place,” Frey explained. “This affects our residents, it affects our families, it hurts our roads and our safety in our communities.”
Mayor Frey reacts to the spate of violence over the past 2 nights in Minneapolis
Mayor Jacob Frey spoke Saturday morning on West Broadway, where in the past two nights eight people have been shot on one block. Across the city, in the past two days, a total of 13 people have been shot. Hundreds of people in the community turned out Saturday to occupy a section of land on the north side, not far from the infamous intersection where the first shooting occurred Thursday. At the event, Chris Rainey told FOX 9 he feels unsafe and vulnerable at night in some parts of his community, but he believes more community events can help the situation. “People have to have something to do, a lot of times an idle mind is the devil’s playground,” Rainey said. “Especially young people, if they don’t have something to do that’s constructive, they’re going to do something destructive.” The Minneapolis Police Department is asking anyone with any information about the shooting to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
