The driver of one of the motorcycles, a 39-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said in a statement issued Saturday night. It appears the victim lost control of his vehicle when he braked sharply in response to slowing traffic in the middle lane, according to police. The motorcycle fell on its side partially blocking the right lane. “While the driver attempted to pick up the motorcycle and get back on board, another motorcycle, driven by a 44-year-old man, hit the victim,” police said. The second driver was slightly injured and was released after being treated at the hospital. According to the police service, speed and impairment are not believed to be factors in the crash. Southbound Deerfoot Trail at Peigan Trail SE and westbound Peigan Trail at Deerfoot Trail SE were closed until late afternoon as the Calgary Police Traffic Division investigated the fatal crash. Anyone with dash cam footage or other information about the incident is asked to call police at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
