It is not yet clear how many subpoenas have been issued. The Justice Department is looking into the Trump team’s fundraising between the 2020 presidential election and January 6, 2021, and how that money was used. That probe is separate from the investigation into the former president’s handling of classified documents, which resulted in the FBI seizing materials from his Mar-a-Lago residence last month. The department’s investigation into the Capitol attack has accelerated in the past week. William Russell, a close adviser to Trump, was subpoenaed Wednesday in connection with the investigation. Russell, 31, was often seen at Trump’s side, serving as the White House’s Deputy Advance and Trip Director. She was with the former president for part of the day of the riots and moved to Florida to continue working for Trump after his presidency. FBI personnel visited Russell’s Florida home for questioning Wednesday morning, but he was out, according to a person familiar with the matter. Investigators later contacted him by phone and issued a subpoena via email. Russell’s attorney, Derek Ross, did not respond to a request for comment. Russell, originally from Mississippi, began working at the White House in 2017. A Trump spokesman criticized the investigation, claiming the Justice Department was trying to “intimidate” the former president’s supporters. “It won’t work. Save America is more committed than ever to working for freedom, free and fair elections, equal justice under the law, strong borders, safe streets, energy independence, great education and more others,” said Liz Harrington, the spokeswoman.
