It’s finally happening: Assassin’s Creed is coming to Japan. After a series of previous reports and leaks, Ubisoft finally made the news official during Saturday’s Game Show 2022. It was just a short tease, but we got a quick look at animations of a ninja slithering through the shadows in feudal Japan. Currently called Project Red, Ubisoft has confirmed that the game will be the next major entry in the latest open-world RPG turn of the series. Development is being carried out by Ubisoft Quebec, the studio that previously directed Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. It is also headed by Jonathan Dumont, one of several senior Ubisoft executives accused of bullying and other toxic behavior during a 2020 workplace audit at the company. The company previously claimed that anyone accused of misconduct was thoroughly investigated and sanctioned where appropriate. Fans have been hoping for an Assassin’s Creed game based in Japan for years, and it looks like the French publisher has finally relented. Exactly how the series’ evolving open-world RPG formula will play out there remains to be seen, but now it looks like the critically acclaimed stealthy sandbox Ghost of Tsushima will officially have some competition. Rumors surrounding the game, codenamed Project Red, began swirling earlier this summer. Bloomberg later reported that the game would be part of Assassin’s Creed Infinity, a new platform intended to integrate multiple time periods and worlds to help players move between them more seamlessly. But hey, that’s almost nothing compared to the $663 value you get from all 18 games combined. However, Project Red is only one of three new Assassin’s Creed games coming. There’s also Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which started out as a DLC expansion for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla before being spun off into a smaller standalone game to help fill the gaps in Ubisoft’s release calendar. Project Neo/Hex, meanwhile, is a third game ostensibly set in Europe during the witch-hunt era that’s also coming further down the line. The Division 2 and Watch Dogs Legion didn’t exactly push either of those series to new heights, and the French publisher has yet to find a multiplayer service game that can replicate the success of Rainbow Six Siege. Meanwhile, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and, more recently, Valhalla, have both been excellent and seen years of sales for the company. Let’s hope doubling down on this formula doesn’t cut it. Earlier in September, Ubisoft announced that Chinese conglomerate Tencent is buying a 49.9 percent stake in the investment vehicle that allowed Ubisoft’s leaders to retain control of the company. Everyone, it seems, is betting big on Assassin’s Creed.
