Gardai are “investigating all the circumstances” surrounding the tragic deaths in Co Westmeath. 1 The road has been closed while investigations continue The incident happened near Multyfarnham at around 4pm. Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the scene, where the remains of the teenage girl were discovered. An infant was taken from the scene of the fire to the car and taken by ambulance to Midland District Hospital, Mullingar. He was later pronounced dead. An adult woman was rushed to a Dublin hospital by ambulance with serious but non-life threatening injuries. State pathologist Dr. Sally Ann Collis performed autopsies on the bodies of the two children, and the results will not be released for technical reasons. Gardai continue to appeal to anyone with information about the fatal crash. A garda spokesman said this afternoon: “Gardai in Mullingar are continuing to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the deaths of a 2-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl following a fatal car fire in County Westmeath on Friday, 9 September 2022. “Autopsies have been concluded on the bodies of both deceased by State Coroner Dr Sally Ann Collis. “The results of the post-mortem examinations are not being released for operational reasons. “Forensic examination of the vehicle by the Garda Technical Bureau is ongoing. “A woman in her 40s remains treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries at a Dublin hospital. “The Garda Siochana continue to appeal to anyone with any information in relation to this fatal incident to contact them. “You can contact the incident room at Mullingar Garda Station on 044 9384000 or contact the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station. “A Garda Family Liaison Officer is continuing to update the family at this time. “The investigation is ongoing and further updates will follow.”
“A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY”
Fianna Fail Cllr for the Mullingar-Kinnegad area, John Shaw offered his condolences to the family involved. He said: “It appears to be a tragic incident. “Your heart would go out to any family to lose children in such circumstances. “I don’t know many details to be honest, but regardless of what happened or how it happened, it’s a terrible tragedy for a quiet area like Multyfarnham.” Sinn Fein TD for Longford and Westmeath Sorca Clarke also offered her condolences this evening. He said: “Desperately sad news from Multyfarnham. Thoughts and deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones. “Thoughts also to the emergency services and all who came to their aid.”
