Rec Rentals @ the Docks opened at the Rotary Club of Welland Park last year, after 10 years of operating out of the Community Boathouse on Thorold Road under the COVID-19 restrictions. “We took a reservation-based approach to accommodate cleaning and security protocols. This year, we returned to normal first-come, first-served operation and saw an increase in participation. “We are seeing more traffic for both swimming and rentals. We currently offer a life jacket loan program to promote safe swimming @ the Docks, which will continue next season,” said Degazio. The reservation system was abolished this year, and rentals are now only intermediate traffic. He said this season, the rental program — which includes canoes, single and tandem kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and standup paddleboards (SUPs) — has expanded its hours, opening daily at 9 a.m. for a more consistent schedule, unlike previous years where there were weekday and weekend hours. “Weather permitting, there are often dozens of people along the shoreline enjoying the waterway and amenities.” With the city’s summer students heading back to school, Rec Rentals @ the Docks is now open on weekends from 9am. until 6 p.m. The last day of operation is September 18. While mostly residents frequent the rental facilities, Degazio said people come from neighboring communities. He said people comment on the accessibility of the site, on the west side of the recreational canal, and spend an hour on the water on average. Kayaks remain the top rental boats, he said. SHARE:
