Last year, the same thing happened with many features, either delayed during beta cycles or Apple deciding they weren’t ready yet. With that in mind, here are the features you shouldn’t expect to see until later this year. iOS 16’s redesigned lock screen is definitely one of the coolest features coming with this new operating system later this fall, but not everything Apple previewed will be available a few months from now. According to the company, these two features will arrive later this year:
Live Activities: Live Activities helps you keep track of things happening in real time, right from your lock screen. Live Activities API: Follow a sports game in progress or track the progress of your ride or order at a glance. Check out Live Activities from your favorite third-party apps with the new developer API.
Without Live Activities arriving with the first public release of iOS 16, App Clips won’t support it when the new OS launches, though it will feature an increased size limit and accurate location suggestions in the Spotlight and Siri Suggestions widgets. Expected for iOS 16, iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura, Freeform – a new flexible canvas – will also be released later this year. With the Freeform app, users will have a canvas to sketch out new projects and collaborate in real-time while chatting via iMessage or FaceTime. This board has plenty of room for many people working together writing or drawing. Game Center will also lack features at the launch of iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura, as these two features will take a little longer:
SharePlay Support: Games that use Game Center multiplayer support have SharePlay integration. You can automatically start playing with friends in a FaceTime call. Contacts integration: Contacts displays the Game Center profiles of your friends. Tap to see what they’re playing and achieving in games.
For iOS 16 and tvOS 16, Matter support won’t start until a little later in the year. Matter is a new standard of smart home connectivity that will allow compatible accessories to work together seamlessly, across all platforms. Matter will let you choose from even more compatible smart home accessories and control them with the Home app and Siri on Apple devices. For iPadOS 16, Focus Filter, which will be the ability to set boundaries within Apple apps like Calendar, Mail, Messages, and Safari to draw boundaries for each Focus you turn on, won’t start with the first version of iPadOS 16. Last but not least, a few days after announcing the iOS 16 release date, Apple said that iCloud Shared Photo Library will not be available at launch – likely due to iPadOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura being delayed. Here’s how Apple describes this feature: “iCloud Shared Photo Library gives families a new way to seamlessly share photos with a separate iCloud library that up to six users can collaborate on, contribute to, and enjoy. Users can choose to share existing photos from their personal libraries or share based on the start date or people in the photos. A user can also choose to send photos to the Shared library automatically using a new toggle in the Camera app. Additionally, users will receive smart suggestions to share a photo that includes participants in the Shared Photo Library. Each user in the Shared Photo Library has access to add, delete, edit or favorite the shared photos or videos, which will appear in each user’s Memories and Featured Photos, so everyone can relive more fulfilling family moments.”
iPadOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura will also be delayed
According to Bloomberg, Apple will delay the release of iPadOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura by a month. Journalist Mark Gurman reports that the company is aiming for an October release alongside macOS 13 Ventura. While Apple usually releases macOS updates after its other operating systems, it looks like the same will happen with iPadOS this year to ensure that Stage Manager and other new features run more smoothly.
Wrap up
As we’re just days away from the release of iOS 16, we’ll likely learn more about the delayed features before the beta cycle ends. We’ll be sure to update this article once we hear what other features will be delayed – hopefully not as much as iOS 15. Read more: FTC: We use affiliate links that automatically earn you income.
