Thanks to leaked iPhone 14 Pro benchmarks, we finally know the true performance levels of Apple’s new A16 chipset. And if that was the reason you were planning to buy a new Pro model, the message is clear: don’t bother. Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro apple The first Geekbench test result for the ‘iPhone15.3’ (the identifier for the iPhone 14 Pro) has been published, revealing the most incremental gain ever recorded by a next-generation iPhone chipset. The iPhone 14 Pro achieves a single-core score of 1879 and a multi-core score of 4664. In comparison, the iPhone 13 Pro and its A15 chipset score 1707 in single-core and 4659 in multi-core. While the former is a marginal improvement of just 9%, the latter is virtually identical within a margin of error. Given that the architecture analysis of the A16 chipset concluded that it would deliver CPU and GPU gains of 15% and 25-30%, respectively, this comes as a shock. Earlier leaks were even more optimistic, indicating jumps of 42% for the CPU and 35% for the GPU. Apple’s A16 chipset is exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro apple So should you be disappointed? Yes and no. On the one hand, it’s disappointing to learn that the A16 provides little more future-proofing than year-old silicon. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 was already the fastest smartphone available, and performance hasn’t been an issue on iPhones for quite some time. And there are some reasons to be happy. Apple claims the faster memory speeds in the A16 will benefit graphics-intensive games, and its 4nm manufacturing is more efficient than the 5nm A15. This results in an extra hour of runtime for iPhone 14 models when watching video. So no, the A16 isn’t the all-singing, all-dancing revolution that leaks and reviews have led us to believe. But it’s no deal breaker either, and with the iPhone 14 Pro models offering display, camera and battery improvements along with the innovative new ‘Dynamic Island’ user interface, that’s a shock we all have to get over.
