A woman was seriously injured in the incident which happened in Lackan at around 4pm yesterday evening. Coole Road outside Multyfarnham remains closed this morning as Gardaí try to establish how the fire started. Passers-by spotted the car and alerted gardaí, and when they arrived, the car was on fire. A woman was treated at the scene and later airlifted to a Dublin hospital for treatment. Her injuries are said to be serious but not life-threatening. A baby boy was taken by ambulance to Mullingar District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The remains of a young woman were found inside the car. A technical and forensic examination began at the scene last night as they work to establish how the fire started. The car was taken for further examination. State Pathologist Dr Sally Anne Collis was at the scene last night and will carry out post-mortem examinations on the two children today. Garda sources say the outcome of post-mortems and evidence gathered from the technical examination will determine the course of the investigation. A Garda Family Liaison Officer has been appointed and Gardaí say they will continue to support the family involved in partnership with other government agencies. An incident room has been set up at Mullingar Garda Station and a Senior Investigator has been appointed to lead the investigation.
