A Kingston police officer has been injured and the intersection of Princess Street and Portsmouth Avenue has been closed as police continue negotiations with the person involved in Thursday’s attack at the Kingston Centre. The man barricaded himself in an apartment at the downtown intersection and fired at police officers, wounding one.

At approximately 1:33 p.m., police sent out an alert that they were in Kingston Center looking for a man with an “edged weapon.” The man was involved in an assault at the 1100 Princess St. location. at approximately 12:45 p.m. The man was believed to be armed and anyone who saw him should immediately call 911. At 3:15 p.m., police notified the public that they had located the man. They located the man at the apartments at 1377 Princess St., where he has since barricaded himself. Adjacent apartments have been evacuated and residents have received shelter and support from Victim Services of Kingston and Frontenac. Police confirmed they had negotiated with the man overnight and continue to do so. During the negotiations, the man discharged a firearm at the officers, Const. Anthony Colangeli said Friday morning. He said shrapnel from the gunshot struck an officer, causing minor injuries. The officer was taken to the hospital by Frontenac Paramedics, treated and has since been released.

“We are on scene to respond to an ongoing incident in the area of ​​Princess Street at Portsmouth Avenue,” police said. “The junction of Princess Street and Portsmouth Avenue is currently closed. All pedestrian and vehicle traffic is requested to use alternate routes. There is no risk to public safety at this time.” Police closed the westbound lanes of Princess Street at Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard and the eastbound lanes of Taylor-Kidd Boulevard. They also closed the southbound lanes of Portsmouth Avenue at Glengarry Street and the northbound lanes at Fairview Street. “Local traffic will be allowed to leave the area, however they will not be able to access the area after leaving until the incident is resolved,” police said.

“There is no risk to public safety at this time. Police are asking motorists and pedestrians to take an alternative route.” The incident has affected several Kingston Transit routes and some stops have been out of service. Kingston Transit tweeted that Princess Street routes 501, 502, 4 and 16 to the train station and route 18 are bypassing the area. All bus stops on Princess Street, in both directions, between John Counter Boulevard and Taylor-Kidd Boulevard and Sir John A. Macdonald boulevard are out of service. All bus stops on Portsmouth Avenue between Fairview Road and Princess Street are also out of service. Kingston Transit said the 501 and 4 routes to downtown will detour from the Princess Street stage at Portsmouth Avenue to Fairview Road and then to Hillendale Avenue. They will provide service at the Parkway and Hillendale Avenue bus stops.
