As police arrived at the scene, the person in crisis reportedly jumped into the St. Marys. Officers and bystanders were able to get the subject back to dry land and he was treated by EMS and no injuries were reported during the incident. The complete Sault Ste. Marie Police press release is included below. On September 8, 2022, around 7 p.m. officers responded to a call of a person in crisis near the Sault Canal Lock. They made contact with other emergency responders before police arrived, but when officers arrived, the person jumped into the St. Louis River. Marys. The police responded quickly and prepared for a water rescue. One officer jumped into the water, with other officers providing support by attaching a safety rope to the officer and the nearby shoreline. A nearby bystander also jumped into the river to support officers in the rescue and another threw a life jacket into the water to aid in the rescue. The person in crisis was eventually secured on the safety line and brought to shore safely. “I want to commend our members, both sworn and civilian, as well as members of the community for their courageous effort during this incident,” says Chief Hugh Stevenson. “Without hesitation, officers and community members put their own well-being aside. Their heroic actions are admirable and saved this person’s life.” After the person in crisis was safely rescued, EMS attended and they were transported to the hospital for treatment. No injuries were reported during this incident.
