Peel Regional Police say they have responded to more than 22 calls to Her Nightclub, located near Eglinton Avenue East and Dixie Road, since January of last year.
The most recent incident occurred on September 4. Police say a man was seriously injured after shots were fired outside the nightclub.
According to a statement from Enforcement Director Mike Foley, the suspension takes effect Friday and will last 14 days.
“During the suspension period, Entice Ultra Club/Her Nightclub must cease operations and will be provided with conditions to comply with in order to maintain their Adult Entertainment License and Restaurant License,” the statement said .
Few details were given as to why the city chose to close the club at this time. But Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said the decision was made “given the recurring issues and risk to public safety.”
“As a city, we are doing everything within our power and jurisdiction to address ongoing safety concerns and help keep our residents safe,” he said in a statement to CTV News Toronto on Friday.
“Gun and gang violence have no place in our city and threaten the lives not only of those involved, but also the safety of innocent bystanders who may be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
In August, police issued a public warning about “increased risks” associated with visiting the club.
Some of the calls police responded to include the seizure of six firearms, “multiple” priority calls for disorderly conduct, as well as four additional shootings.
“The increased police resources available to respond to calls for service at this facility is impacting our ability to promptly respond to other priority calls,” police said in the news release.
After the Sept. 4 shooting, Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie hinted that city bylaw officers have increased compliance checks at HER nightclub. He urged residents to avoid the facility as police carry out their investigations.
