A group of more than 100 migrants from the southern border have been moved to an Illinois suburb after being welcomed in Chicago – a move that reportedly upset local officials. The migrants are staying at a Hampton Inn in Burr Ridge and a Holiday Inn in Countryside, WGN-TV reports. An estimated 300 immigrants have been bussed from Texas to Chicago in the past two weeks.
While Chicago is a sanctuary city and Cook County is a sanctuary county, the immigrants at the Burr Ridge Hampton Inn are in DuPage County. The status of the county refuge is unclear. But Burr Ridge Republican Mayor Gary Grasso previously said he would work to secure the border and “defund sanctuary cities,” according to WGN-TV. I’m as disappointed as Mayor Lightfoot that she’s not being told,” said Mayor Gary Grasso. “I am disappointed but we are dealing with the situation and I will keep my residents and businesses informed.” Grasso mentioned that Mayor Lightfoot had previously attacked Gov. Abbott for transporting immigrants, calling it “unacceptable” at a press conference this week. “My disappointment comes from his actions the governor of texas,” said the mayor of Chicago. “There could be a level of coordination and cooperation, but it chooses not to do any of that. Instead, it chooses to send human beings across the country to an uncertain destination.” Mayor Lori Lightfoot speaks during a science initiative event in Chicago. JB Pritzker made similar comments, accusing Abbott of treating immigrants “like cattle.” CHICAGO MAYOR LIGHTFOOT DENIES ‘TOXICITY IN PUBLIC SPEECH’ DAYS AFTER YELLED ‘F— CLARENCE THOMAS!’ Abbott pushed back against Lightfoot’s comments, accusing her of shifting the blame to him instead of President Biden. “[Biden’s] Inaction at our border is putting Texan lives at risk and crushing our communities,” the Texas governor said in a tweet. “Texas is doing Biden’s job to secure the border.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Mayor Lightfoot’s office did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
