Manitoba’s justice system has confirmed that the court has been renamed the Court of King’s Bench following the death of Queen Elizabeth on Thursday. Her son, Charles, automatically became king on her death. “In light of the sad news concerning the Queen’s death” and in accordance with the Queen’s Court Act, the court “in name and in all documents and proceedings shall [now designated] and described as the Court of King’s Bench,” said a notice posted on the court’s website, which is Manitoba’s highest court. The website itself had not yet been updated to reflect the name change as of Thursday afternoon. Manitoba Justice said that in addition to the website, other documents and signs will be updated as soon as possible. Similar changes have already come into force for courts in other provinces, including Alberta. Queen Elizabeth, Canada’s head of state and longest-reigning British monarch died Thursday afternoon at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. It was 96.
